«Соломенный мужчина», морально слабый, ненадёжный человек, а также малоимущий человек. Это слово имеет отношение к судебной области. В течение XVII—XVIII вв. оно означало лжесвидетеля. Чтобы показать свою готовность дать ложные показания, бродяги и другие представители дна общества околачивались вокруг судов в Лондоне с пучком соломы, торчащим из туфель. Юристы часто используют эту фразу по отношению к тем, кто настолько беден, что не в состоянии заплатить штраф или расплатиться за любое другое финансовое наказание, вынесенное судом.
